When three young witches, Electra, Cassandra, and Medea, decided to practice witchcraft, they had no idea what consequences the wrong spell could have. Ghosts that scare the townspeople, and an old witch with an eerie wail are their minor problems.
Meanwhile, sixteen-year-old Eric O’Brian is sent to live in a small town called Hollow, which seems to be stuck in the 1800s. Soon he finds out that the beautiful town full of colorful ravines, green highlands, and dense forests, is not an ordinary one: flowers that whisper, a shop that steals the time, and a hanged man coming to life on the Halloween night lead him to believe that Hollow is a mystical place inhabited by witches.
After meeting the mysterious girls and befriending them, Eric becomes a part of the world with time traveling, medieval bards, flying brooms, and paintings with parallel reality.
Then a murder happens in Hollow...

More 'Little Women" than "Harry Potter"

And I liked that.
But firstly, I'm not comparing the classic "Little Women" or dearly loved HP to this book (just in case someone might jump to assumptions).
The cover and the title might lead one to think that this book is about witches and wizards, and it is, actually, but not in the way you'd think. It's more about 3 witch-girls who have to deal with discrimination in a strange town where witches once lived, but then almost everyone was killed. And the relationship between the witch sisters is what caught my eye. Although they have done a stupid thing which causes lots of trouble, those girls were still likeable, sweet, brave, and a bit crazy (one of them).
It's a lovely book, but it won't suit to those readers who want action, fights with werewolves, chases with vampires, love stories and heartaches.

A lovely series start!

How often these days can you say that you just read a lovely, sweet story? The YA stories these days seem to be all about angst, teenage lust-triangles, vicious werewolves and vampires. In other words, dark.
This is a `supernatural' story, but entirely different from the norm. Three young witches, Electra, Cassandra and Medea, live in a small village where once witchcraft was the norm. Now, witches are confined to living on `the other side of the river' (read, "the other side of the tracks") and magic is frowned upon. Never fear, the girls are determined to learn magic spells, even if their Aunt Andromeda frowns on it! Along comes Eric O'Brian, sent to live in the village of Hollow because of his bad hehavious, because you know YA books have to have a `boy-interest,' right?
What happens next is just plain fun. There is funny magic, flying brooms and mystery, oh, my! If you are tired of all the angst so common amongst today's YA novels, this is definitely the book for you. It's lovely for your daughter (or son!) but as an adult, I found it just as much fun.
Try it. It is a bit slow at the first, but don't let that stop you. This is the first of a series (three so far) and I look forward to reading the rest.

Love the series

WH1 - 4 out of 5 (lovely and sweet).
WH2 - 4.5 out of 5 (adventurous and fun).
WH3 - 5 out of 5 (Just wow!)
As I said this first part is very nice, sweet book and as it turned out, it was just the setting for the upcoming adventures.
I just read the beta version of the 3rd book. Read it in one sitting. OMG, OMG, so many things will be happening. No, i can't tell what. that's my beta reading rule, but this is such a great series.
When reading the first book I'd never think what will be happening in Hollow and what kind of adventures and troubles the characters will have.
And the ending was SO unexpected. i could never ever see it hapenning. I am now confused: who is really the bad guy (or maybe the bad girl?)?
Can't wait for the 4th part.
