Review
“Landon blends the fantasy of unexpected true love with the harsh realities of loss in this latest offering that grows into a memorable and moving read. Her main couple’s relationship is deceptively complex, and their journey is as touching as it is unexpected … Landon’s deeply sympathetic treatment of her hero’s addiction and his fascinating chemistry with his staunchly courageous bride will draw readers into this plot and keep them enthralled.” —RT Book Reviews, 4 stars

Ordinary romance, nothing special.
By Orion
Griffin Blackmoor is a veteran spy and a drunkard. After seeing several people he loved die horrible deaths, he seems to have lost his taste for life, and he is drowning his sorrows in a bottle.

Lady Anne is in dire straits and must marry. Her brother died with no heir and an entailed estate, leaving her and her sister destitute.

Griffin tries to help Anne find a husband, but ends up taking the position himself. Meanwhile, there is a villain on the loose. It is very obvious who the villain is, but it takes Griffin and Anne nearly 300 pages to figure it out.

Then there is an exciting climax and a happy ending. So it was okay... but not great. The story kind of dragged in the middle, the mystery was pretty obvious, and the chemistry between Griffin and Anne was weak. Really, neither character had much going for them. He's a drunk, she's a spinster, and they are both bitter and humorless. So they are a perfect match.

I've been reading a lot of romance novels lately. Some are better than others. See my other reviews for some recommendations.

Victorian romantic mystery
By ConstantReader
Griffin Blackmoor has become an alchoholic since his wife and son died in an accident at sea. He blames himself and drinks to numb the pain. His friend Freddie joins him for a drink at a tavern one day, and is killed by a sniper shot. Freddie's last words to Griff are to ask him to take care of his sister, Anne. Griff is sure the shot was meant for him, as he was a once a member of British intelligence, and is determined to find and punish the culprit. He also needs to fulfill his promise to Freddie. He decides to try to stop drinking, get Anne married off, and deal with the assassin. He gets romantically involved with Anne, while fighting against it due to his past tragedy and the danger he feels he is exposing her to. Anne has demons of her own, as her father was an alcoholic that ignored his family for his addiction to the bottle. She's determined never to have to deal with a drunk again, although she's attracted to Griff. Their relationship is believable and involving. There is no explicit sex, only PG rated type romantic scenes, which may be refreshing to many. I was a bit irritated by Anne constantly telling Griff to deal with his addiction by taking it "one day at a time", thus plagiarizing a saying by Alchoholics Anonymous - which didn't exist until the 20th century. Even so, I liked the romance part of the story enough to give it 4 stars. Unfortunately, the mystery part was ridiculous and smacked of the "idiot plot" where the reader can guess the real intended victim of the sniper attack early on, as well as the culprit and general motive besides. One has to wonder about Griff as an intelligence officer if he spends so much time investigating what's right in front of his face. Hero and heroine also obliviously walk right into danger. So the mystery part is worth 2 stars. The book would have been better concentrating on the romantic relationship, leaving out the mystery altogether.

It's OK...
By Misfit
Griffin Blackmoor is a hero with a world of emotional baggage from his past. He blames himself for the death of his wife and son, and after returning from the Crimean War he's been slowly drinking himself to death. When the story opens, he's with a close friend who takes a bullet that Griffin is sure was meant for him (all that spying and skullduggery whilst in the war and all). Said friend dies, and the entire estate is entailed to a distant cousin, leaving the two younger sisters penniless. Griffin's guilt knows no bounds (and his drinking is even worst than before), and he makes arrangements for the elder sister to have a season and hopefully find a wealthy husband to care for her.

Well, this being a romance novel you know Griffin and Lady Anne are going to fall in love, and since there's a murder mystery afoot you know they're going to have to solve that too. Unfortunately, despite Griffin being a super-duper top-drawer spy of the highest order, it takes him a very long time to figure out who the baddie is. The reader, on the other hand, will figure it all out by page 50 or so.

Top that off with Griffin's overly melodramatic pity party (felt like I was being clubbed over the head with it all), this just wasn't a book that kept my interest. I finished it, but I was very glad it was over. The romance was nice enough when it did get going, but be warned - there's not going to be any hot sex to make up for the heavy-handed writing - wedding night behind closed doors.

While I do enjoy reading historical romances, I generally steer clear of what's being published in today's marketplace, so I have a hard time comparing this to what I'm accustomed to. Perhaps this style of writing is what's common for today's romances and would suit the every-day romance reader, your mileage may vary.
