Good read, spoiled by editing

The story line was OK - 4 stars but the editing was consistently bad. This forced me to mentally drop out of the story and try and work out what was being said. Some mistakes were easy "that" when it should be the main character "Thad" but he instead of she in a conversation meant that I had to back track to see who was speaking. Drugged instead of dragged seems to be a common substitution. Some I could not work out but it meant that I stopped reading the story and had to think what on earth the author was trying to mean.

Not just a middle book

Thoroughly enjoyed the sequel, thankfully it was not a connector book. I also greatly appreciated the fact that it was not an 'Action' based book. What I mean by this is that the characters experience life as you or I could and reacted in an acceptable manor. There wasn't one calamity after another but real life experiences that have or might have happened in the past or in the present day, Iran, Afghanistan, Irac.
It might be hard to believe that a 15 year-old could behave in such a way yet again people grow up rather quickly when they have too. I don't want to give any spoilers away but I would greatly recommend this book as we as the previous one.
One last note, the dedication meant the world to me. My youngest is currently in Jalalabad, my oldest served in Kabul, and my middle son in the Persian Gulf. Too many times we at home forget that Tomas Jefferson's quote, "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." Personally I would rather it be the blood of Tyrants. I want my son back whole.

Interesting premise, but faulty character development.

After reading the first book, I was fairly involved in the characters and the plot. Also I had read most of the reviews and many people said it was a good story, but the editing made it tough to read. I thought the plot was average, and the characters were slowly developing, with a few odd choices mixed in, which to me did not fit or made me think the character was just stupid. Overall the first book was average. As I started this book , I was curious to see how Thad, handled being captured. I was sorely disappointed with the beginning of the book and just couldn't finish. This contains some spoilers so stop reading if you don't like those. I just cannot understand how after
1) Being imprisoned
2) Being chained to a bed for weeks
3) Being constantly Drugged
4) Being Branded on his forehead
he still shows none of the uglier human emotions, hate, revenge, even a temper tantrum would be nice. No he is nice to his captors, does not hate the queen for pretty much torturing him and keeping him in chains for an extended period of time even after he saved her and her daughters lives. He has stated in the past, that all he wants is his freedom, yet at the first let up of his "imprisonment" he agrees to all of his captors terms basically becoming a slave with "benefits". He is even sociable with his captor/torturer. Dont' forget he is still branded on his forehead. His characters reactions and actions in this part of the book are just not believable for me. Also there is no mention of thoughts of escaping, he just lies down prepared to die slowly. I won't be reading any more.
