After The Ending (The Ending Series, #1), by Lindsey Fairleigh, Lindsey Pogue

The first book in the emotionally charged post-apocalyptic series: THE ENDING SERIES.

The Virus spread. Billions died. The Ending began. We may have survived the apocalypse, but the Virus changed us.

When people started getting sick, "they" thought it was just the flu. My roommate, my boyfriend, my family...they're all gone now. I got sick too. I should have died with them--with the rest of the world--but I didn't. I thought witnessing the human population almost disappear off the face of the earth was the craziest thing I'd ever experience. I was so wrong. My name is Dani O'Connor, I'm twenty-six-years-old, and I survived The Ending.

The Virus changed everything. The world I knew is gone, and life is backwards. We've all had to start over. I've been stripped of my home, my dreams...all that is me. I'm someone else now--broken and changed. Other survivors' memories and emotions haunt me. They invade my mind until I can no longer separate them from my own. I won't let them consume me. I can't. My name is Zoe Cartwright, I'm twenty-six-years-old, and I survived The Ending.

We've been inseparable for most of our lives, and now our friendship is all we have left. The aftermath of the Virus has stranded us on opposite sides of the United States. Trusting strangers, making sacrifices, killing--we'll do anything to reach one another. Fear and pain may be unavoidable, but we're strong...we're survivors. But to continue surviving in this unfamiliar world plagued by Crazies and strange new abilities, we have to adapt. We have to evolve.

And more than anything, we have to find each other.

An Apocalyptic soap opera... ?????
By Chattykat
I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for a review.

So, this is a story about Zoe and Dani... they are both separated and traveling with different groups after the world was stricken by a deadly flu virus killing almost everyone. Those that have survived were all the people who had previously survived the H1N1 virus. And, apparently this somehow has caused many people to have developed "special powers". For example, Zoe can sort of read minds. What???

There is no gas, the phones don't work, no cable, people are looting and the world is falling apart... BUT apparently there is Wifi everywhere they go... even in a cabin out in the middle of nowhere there is Wifi!!! Seriously... Dani and Zoe are communicating by email as they travel... this makes no sense whatsoever. But, it never occurs to them to try to communicate with their missing loved ones... No... instead it's much more important to exchange daily drama updates of all the hot guys and skanky ho-ho's that are in their present company.

Everything that we read about what is happening to Dani and Zoe gets repeated when they are exchanging their emails so you're actually reading the same stuff twice which makes the book move very slow.

Dani and her boyfriend were sick together... he died... she didn't. Apparently they were desperately in love but within one week she's got the hots for another guy and is thinking about getting laid. Don't most people grieve when the love of their life dies??

A good majority of the characters in this book seem to be more concerned with getting laid and hooking up instead of thinking about how they're going to survive the end of the world. I seriously banged my head on my kindle in frustration at the sheer immaturity of these characters.

Here is one line that had me rolling:

"Cece held the knife up like a surgeon."

Yes, Cece was about to stab Dani while she was sleeping... like a surgeon??? Do surgeons do that??? I hope not...

Anyway, this is supposed to be an adult apocalyptic story but it felt like a High School Apocalyptic soap opera. It's not well written and too many events that take place are not explained at all or just don't make sense. So, it goes without saying that I would recommend passing on this one.

Avoid Unless You are a Sophomore in High School
By Joyflsong
After reading a portion of The Ending series I had to check Amazon to see if I had purchased young adult books by mistake. The majority of the story is concerned with muscle bound guys, catty and inexplicably threatening acquaintances and sex, sex, sex and did I mention sex? The interchangeable characters of Dani and Zoe are concerned mostly with the minute to minute moods of Jason and I forget his name (seriously) something with a J. In my defense, the boys were interchangeable too. The cults with easily eliminated leaders, the super powers every preteen longs for, the obliging domestic, wild and ferociuos animals, the easy availability of food, safe shelter and Wifi, all contributed to this regreatable series.
I suggest you read serious, thought provoking post apocalyptic books like The Road by Cormac McCarthy unless you are an adolescent angst addict.

How did this get so many 4/5 star reviews?!
By Amazon Customer
This book gets one star for the fact that the premise intrigued me enough to download it. It was downhill from there. I'm still not quite sure why I even finished it... I was ready to not pick it up again after about 5 chapters.

Some things I found off putting:

- I didn't even care about the main characters. They are supposed to be 26 years old, but they act like they're 16. Their characters were flat. It bothered me that it is the end of the world as they know it and have lost lots of loved ones, and they seemed more concerned about drama and sex. If I was asked to describe the two main characters, I would probably say "horny" and "immature."
- way too much sex stuff... and it was all super cheesy. Those two main girls get turned on by everything! I got sick of the descriptions of how simply brushing against someone accidentally basically got them all hot and bothered.
- I know similies and metaphors make books more interesting and descriptive, but at times I felt like I was reading an English assignment in which the goal was go cram as many metaphors and similies into the pages as possible. Most of them sounded forced or like the authors were trying WAY to hard to be creative.
- it moved along So. Stinking. Slow.
- the "superpowers" plot was just weird.
- Over use of the "f" word. It was so unnecessary. I'm not a prude about language, but using it so much is pointless.

I can see how maybe 14 or 15 year-olds would like this, but even then, I wouldn't let my 14 year old read it because of the language and sex. If you consider yourself to have good taste in books at all, don't waste your time with this.
