A poorly timed wish after the gift of the ring has dire consequences however, as magic enters the world. All that they know, or have known, begins to come unraveled as first their comfortable existence in this bucolic town is ripped from them, then their future. They reach their moment of greatest despair as one of their number flees, another lays near death, and another sleeps in a state akin to a coma... In this moment of vulnerability a man arrives offering a glimmer of hope, Mathew Banks, a federal officer, arrives with the dawn to take them to a place of safety and security. But what is secure when the very laws that govern reality begin to unravel? What is safe when those who watch over you risk change from day to day, moment to moment, and even those who are your closest friends deceive you and risk more than your lives, but the very souls that make you who you are?

An Absolute Delight!!

I was asked to review this book. It took me a bit to get into it. Daniel Black's wife jokingly commented about getting past the prologue. The prologue wasn't a problem. However, I was thinking it was not my usual fare but I determined to give it a fair trial. Somewhere around 10% into the book, it reached out and grabbed my attention and wouldn't let it go.
Michelle had seen a ring in an old pawn shop that she wanted to buy for Adam. She said if he wouldn't ask her to marry him, she'd ask him. None of the group knew that it was not just any ring. The pawnshop keeper knew because he had used it. It was a wish ring. The first wish the recipient of the ring made would come true. Adam and his group were gamers, with Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) being their game of choice. Michelle had given Adam the ring and they were setting up to play. Adam said he wished that magic was real, that the magic of Dungeons and Dragons was in the here and now. The whole group fell asleep and dreamed vivid dreams. Adam perceived what he thought to be the mind of god.
It is at this point that the author makes you stop and think -- what and where is the primordial soup from which everything came? Is there a deep lower level to everything in which 'the mind of god' resides? Can beings we cannot name be released from where they've been held? What would happen if these beings were released?
The group awakens mightily changed. Magic is present in the here and now. This is an excellent first book in a series. You won't want to have to wait for the sequel. Daniel assures me that the second book is almost ready.
It is an absolute delight to read a book in which the author has an excellent grip on the English language and uses it well. His descriptions are such that you can see what he is describing. A lot of the books I have downloaded for my Kindle have good stories but lousy English and are filled with typographical errors. This book is not one of those.
If you like the paranormal, fantasy, and a dash of science fiction expertly swirled together in an unforgettable story, get this book. Ever after you have finished it, you will stop and think "Be careful what you wish for!"

2.5 for Great Start, Mediocre (LONG) middle and end

High Points: Great imagination. The scenes set in the fantasy D&D world are excellent and fun. Decent descriptions.
I can forgive the author for introducing a new character in ch. 35 just because he wrote "for the glory of the Horde!".
Low Points: P.O.V. switches like crazy. Short chapters are good things, but changing the character point of view every half page can get old really quickly.
The reactions didn't seem very realistic. They're mostly very cool with things then there are random sections of about 10 kindle pgs where the dialogue consists of nothing but variations of OMG.
Characterization: Starts off okay, but then spins to nowhere. Basically, there are just too many main people and not enough for them to do. Long version of that: There are a lot of main characters, and as such, it's hard to keep track of them. Adam and Michelle seem important but then toward the middle and the end of the book their roles become nothing. Agent Mathew Banks of the FBI has quite a few sections but he still seems to go nowhere as a character. The old man's entries are sporadic at best, yet we get the feel he's supposed to be important. Brandon and Tim both have magic, yet it seems that there's a lot more focus on Brandon's psionic powers than on Tim. Chelsea pretty much just seems thrown in for the adult scenes. Blake goes off on his own journey to California with a surfer who happens to be driving through wherever they were in the middle of the US.
What I Wish: I wish this book were written for a YA audience. The prologue's pretty boring, but then it picks up the pace and gets to the cool parts where they all have vivid dreams of their D&D style characters. There's good potential here to be an excellent, fast-paced fun story about magic taking over the real world. Unfortunately, the potential hits a lake of meaningless plot points about 1/3 of the way in and never recovers. I can't claim to be an expert on well-written adult scenes, but quite a few of them seem rather pointless. The ending doesn't really tie up much. I think that's because it's going for a sequel.
Who Would Like the Book: If you're the sort to crave adult scenes, you may like the book. If you're a bit D&D fan, it might be interesting to you. If you play WoW, at least the first 1/3 will appeal.

WISHING CAN BE DANGEROUS. A VERY GOOD DEBUT **(4.25 STARS)**

Asked to review this novel, I started reading and was afraid that I was going to have to have to explain politely to the author that I was unable to finish it because I understood nothing about D&D role-playing and did not want to read over 400 pages about a game that was of no interest to me. However, I was intrigued when Michelle was in Old Man McGillicuddy's shop, The Cellar and I kept reading to find answers about both the man and the ring. What exactly was he, how did he get the ring, who created the ring and why and how many times and what wishes had been granted. What happened to the ring one the wish was fulfilled, did it return to him? I kept on reading and was rewarded with a story that made me think and wonder about many things that have occurred throughout time.
This novel has characters that remain with you because they could be someone that lives in your neighborhood. They are just average people who come together because of their love of a game. They aren't out to hurt anyone; they just want to enjoy their life. I think that readers of fantasy will enjoy this novel, even if they aren't D&D fans. The author told me that his second book will soon be out so if you read this now it will still be fresh in your memory when the second one is released.
**UPDATE: June 2013: After much contemplation, I have decided to change how I rate the books I read. I feel that this is necessary for two primary reasons; there are too many high rated reviews from "SP's and or friends of the author. Secondly, we are limited by Amazon's rating system which I feel needs to be changed but until then this is my only option. My standards for the stars, (noted in the title of review), are shown below:**
5 STARS: This will be for books that I consider outstanding, meaning that I will keep the version I have to reread again.
4 STARS: Books I would have previously rated as 5 will be 4.50 or higher and books under 4.50 will be the same as Amazon's 4 (I Like It).
3 STARS: Books I would have previously rated as 4 will be 3.50 or higher; books under 3.50: will be the same as Amazon's 3 (It's OK, recommend).
2 STARS: Books I would have previously rated as 3 will be 2.50 or higher; books under 2.50: it was good enough to finish, not recommend.
1 STAR: Books I would have previously rated as 2 will be 1.50 or higher; books under 1.50: I didn't like it, but eventually I finished it; books under 1.50: I hated it and may not have finished it, not recommend.
