In this moment of vulnerability a man arrives offering a glimmer of hope, Mathew Banks, a federal officer, arrives with the dawn to take them to a place of safety and security. But what is secure when the very laws that govern reality begin to unravel? What is safe when those who watch over you risk change from day to day, moment to moment, and even those who are your closest friends deceive you and risk more than your lives, but the very souls that make you who you are?

An Absolute Delight!!

I was asked to review this book. It took me a bit to get into it. Daniel Black's wife jokingly commented about getting past the prologue. The prologue wasn't a problem. However, I was thinking it was not my usual fare but I determined to give it a fair trial. Somewhere around 10% into the book, it reached out and grabbed my attention and wouldn't let it go.

Michelle had seen a ring in an old pawn shop that she wanted to buy for Adam. She said if he wouldn't ask her to marry him, she'd ask him. None of the group knew that it was not just any ring. The pawnshop keeper knew because he had used it. It was a wish ring. The first wish the recipient of the ring made would come true. Adam and his group were gamers, with Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) being their game of choice. Michelle had given Adam the ring and they were setting up to play. Adam said he wished that magic was real, that the magic of Dungeons and Dragons was in the here and now. The whole group fell asleep and dreamed vivid dreams. Adam perceived what he thought to be the mind of god.

It is at this point that the author makes you stop and think -- what and where is the primordial soup from which everything came? Is there a deep lower level to everything in which 'the mind of god' resides? Can beings we cannot name be released from where they've been held? What would happen if these beings were released?

The group awakens mightily changed. Magic is present in the here and now. This is an excellent first book in a series. You won't want to have to wait for the sequel. Daniel assures me that the second book is almost ready.

It is an absolute delight to read a book in which the author has an excellent grip on the English language and uses it well. His descriptions are such that you can see what he is describing. A lot of the books I have downloaded for my Kindle have good stories but lousy English and are filled with typographical errors. This book is not one of those.

If you like the paranormal, fantasy, and a dash of science fiction expertly swirled together in an unforgettable story, get this book. Ever after you have finished it, you will stop and think "Be careful what you wish for!"

2.5 for Great Start, Mediocre (LONG) middle and end

High Points: Great imagination. The scenes set in the fantasy D&D world are excellent and fun. Decent descriptions.

I can forgive the author for introducing a new character in ch. 35 just because he wrote "for the glory of the Horde!".

Low Points: P.O.V. switches like crazy. Short chapters are good things, but changing the character point of view every half page can get old really quickly.

The reactions didn't seem very realistic. They're mostly very cool with things then there are random sections of about 10 kindle pgs where the dialogue consists of nothing but variations of OMG.

Characterization: Starts off okay, but then spins to nowhere. Basically, there are just too many main people and not enough for them to do. Long version of that: There are a lot of main characters, and as such, it's hard to keep track of them. Adam and Michelle seem important but then toward the middle and the end of the book their roles become nothing. Agent Mathew Banks of the FBI has quite a few sections but he still seems to go nowhere as a character. The old man's entries are sporadic at best, yet we get the feel he's supposed to be important. Brandon and Tim both have magic, yet it seems that there's a lot more focus on Brandon's psionic powers than on Tim. Chelsea pretty much just seems thrown in for the adult scenes. Blake goes off on his own journey to California with a surfer who happens to be driving through wherever they were in the middle of the US.

What I Wish: I wish this book were written for a YA audience. The prologue's pretty boring, but then it picks up the pace and gets to the cool parts where they all have vivid dreams of their D&D style characters. There's good potential here to be an excellent, fast-paced fun story about magic taking over the real world. Unfortunately, the potential hits a lake of meaningless plot points about 1/3 of the way in and never recovers. I can't claim to be an expert on well-written adult scenes, but quite a few of them seem rather pointless. The ending doesn't really tie up much. I think that's because it's going for a sequel.

Who Would Like the Book: If you're the sort to crave adult scenes, you may like the book. If you're a bit D&D fan, it might be interesting to you. If you play WoW, at least the first 1/3 will appeal.

WISHING CAN BE DANGEROUS. A VERY GOOD DEBUT **(4.25 STARS)**

Asked to review this novel, I started reading and was afraid that I was going to have to have to explain politely to the author that I was unable to finish it because I understood nothing about D&D role-playing and did not want to read over 400 pages about a game that was of no interest to me. However, I was intrigued when Michelle was in Old Man McGillicuddy's shop, The Cellar and I kept reading to find answers about both the man and the ring. What exactly was he, how did he get the ring, who created the ring and why and how many times and what wishes had been granted. What happened to the ring one the wish was fulfilled, did it return to him? I kept on reading and was rewarded with a story that made me think and wonder about many things that have occurred throughout time.

This novel has characters that remain with you because they could be someone that lives in your neighborhood. They are just average people who come together because of their love of a game. They aren't out to hurt anyone; they just want to enjoy their life. I think that readers of fantasy will enjoy this novel, even if they aren't D&D fans. The author told me that his second book will soon be out so if you read this now it will still be fresh in your memory when the second one is released.

**UPDATE: June 2013: After much contemplation, I have decided to change how I rate the books I read. I feel that this is necessary for two primary reasons; there are too many high rated reviews from "SP's and or friends of the author. Secondly, we are limited by Amazon's rating system which I feel needs to be changed but until then this is my only option. My standards for the stars, (noted in the title of review), are shown below:**
5 STARS: This will be for books that I consider outstanding, meaning that I will keep the version I have to reread again.
4 STARS: Books I would have previously rated as 5 will be 4.50 or higher and books under 4.50 will be the same as Amazon's 4 (I Like It).
3 STARS: Books I would have previously rated as 4 will be 3.50 or higher; books under 3.50: will be the same as Amazon's 3 (It's OK, recommend).
2 STARS: Books I would have previously rated as 3 will be 2.50 or higher; books under 2.50: it was good enough to finish, not recommend.
1 STAR: Books I would have previously rated as 2 will be 1.50 or higher; books under 1.50: I didn't like it, but eventually I finished it; books under 1.50: I hated it and may not have finished it, not recommend.

Easygoing and relaxed, an enjoyable read

Things are not going well for Kat and Summer. Kat is trying to get over her long-term boyfriend leaving, while looking for her dream graduate job. Her friend Summer's relationship with her live-in boyfriend is on the rocks, and to complicate matters, she's a white witch and environmental protester on the side - and frequently drags Kat into her spare time activities.

When Summer meets Tom, the town’s building planning officer and therefore the environmental enemy, and Kat meets Alex, the site manager at a local controversial housing development, will they each be able to reconcile their principles with the attractions they feel?

I found Kat and Summer to be likeable female leads, and it was fun to follow the fortunes of two couples rather than just one, especially once Alex and Tom came fully into the picture. There were plenty of secondary characters and sub-plots to pep up the interest, and the writing style is easygoing and relaxed. An enjoyable read.

RADIANT GIRL's imagination & love radiate around

Warmly engaging from page 1, Katya's fascination with her various worlds (past, present, future & mythical) is infectious. Kids of all ages (like this 56y/o child therapist) will be intgrigued and charmed, so that the losses and growings of this tweener will well you up with compassion.

Beyond the ominous associations to "Chernobyl", I should've known personal disasters were looming when Katya, luxuriating in her traditional little family and their idyllic cottage, "trusting in life" made her 11th birthday wish: "for these things never to change".

Defying categorization, White's book is more histoical fiction than folk or fairy tale. But, it took a second reading for me to appreciate how the predictions of a domovyk (a "forest creature" or "magical being") seamlessly reinforced the movement of a key theme: how Katya's forward-thinking moves her out of step with her beloved, but time bound parents.

You'll cringe though each conflict and rift with friends as well, hoping that Katya's youthful spark and impulse for goodness can carry the day. There is so much more to discover in this slim, compelling read...

Good enough. Worth having

This review pertains to the book with artwork by Rachel Isadora only. ISBN: 0-399-21336-8. For some reason, Amazon continues to publish this review under the wrong book, one that does not feature artwork by Rachel Isadora, even though I pointed this out to them.
This book is a verbatim retelling of the classic Hans Christian Andersen tale. The story is not embellished or changed in any way. The tale is illustrated with "luminous paintings, capturing the mood of a snowy Victorian winter..." (from the book jacket blurb).
Since the tale is only one and a half pages long, that makes for a slim book. The odd pages feature a paragraph of text , about three sentences, while the even pages feature a painting illustrating the text. About 13 paintings.
The book is hardcovered with two additional paintings, and you get a paper book cover mirroring those two paintings and the bonus blurb.
I can't see reading this story to a child. It's just too dismal. You can't read it without crying. It's an adult topic and an adult treatment. The powerful story is designed to make an adult think and reexamine his behaviour.
I rated the paintings with only three stars because they're good enough, but did not blow me away. The cover painting that you see here on the web site is a good example of the quality and style of the paintings.

Book 1:
Worth the weight, finally a book about a "real" every day person with real struggles. Good book and I'd say it's worth reading.

Book 2:
Worth the Drive, the whole "golf" theme is lame & the golfer & the girl seem forced, like the story doesn't flow well.

Book 3:
Worth the Fall, is ok....it's goes along a similar story line as the first book. Although it seems like the author is trying to pull off a P G 13 version of Fifty Shades of Grey, which if your a fan of those book this is a failed attempt to tread lightly on the BDSM aspect of the characters sexual relationship.

I love to read romance novels. I have many favorite authors and enjoy reading all their works. Thought I would take a leap of faith and yet again try another new author. Most of the books were very entertaining. I must be getting old because I didn't like the high school locker room descriptive words. The story lines were wonderful and well written but to describe the coming together in those words make me think I won't be reading anymore by this author.

I HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE when authors justify cheating. I hate Ron. I hate what he did and I hate why he did it. There is no defense. His reasoning is weak. Wife comes first. Always. You do not have to humiliate and destroy your wife for your mistress regardless. Don't write a cheating scumbag as a shining knight making a choice for his child. HORRIBLE!

Not good for reading out loud

I will be deleting this now that we've read it once. The dialogue is meant for a child just learning to read; it's not at all enjoyable to read out loud. There is also some unnecessary tension between the dad and grandma that does nothing for the plot. Not worth taking up memory on my kindle.

What just happened?

Orangey the Goldfish: Meet the New Puppy starts off on a creative note; it explains the proper pronunciation of the name Orangey. I won't spoil the surprise. As that is pretty much as entertaining as this book gets.

The format is a comic style. Rather than a fun comic book, it's more like a never ending newspaper comic strip. The ones that filter in and out of newspaper circulation quickly, and you skip past to find out what Garfield is up to this week.

"Insert generic father figure here" suddenly realizes his goldfish can talk. Orangey gets interrupted while explaining how hungry he is by "insert generic grandmother representative subject here" who has arrived unannounced with a new puppy. Page after page of bland conversation leads to us finding out that the goldfish wants to teach the puppy to feed him.

I cannot imagine anyone reading this to their children. I am not sure how I made it past page three... Dedication to a fair review I suppose. At least this book does not set any bad examples for any kid who does happen to read it... It just doesn't set any example at all.

Mauro Giuliani (1781-1829), a contemporary of Beethoven and Schubert, was a musician with a mission: to raise the recently invented (but rather quiet) six-string guitar to a level of musical prominence in a world inclined to favor ever-louder operatic, pianistic, and symphonic music. During the years 1806-1819, while he lived in Vienna, Giuliani’s dazzling performances made him the darling of that city, whose press and public hailed him as the greatest guitarist of his generation. His guitar works, rich in chamber music, were published by the foremost Viennese publishers and widely acclaimed. Against all odds, this poor guitarist of modest south-Italian origin made a place in history for himself. He was decisive in launching the classical guitar in central Europe as a versatile instrument capable of moving and enchanting audiences when played with skill and musicianship.

Important new edition of an essential biography

Heck's pathbreaking research on the great Giuliani did for guitar scholarship what Segovia had done for the guitar itself. It established that the guitar had played an important role in the musical life of Vienna in the age of Beethoven and Schubert, and that the instrument had composers, performers, and repertory that were admired by many of the greatest composers of the age. It also inspired a renaissance of interest in Giuliani's music. Since then, Marco Riboni and others have made some important additions to our knowledge of Giuliani; this new edition of Heck's classic study conveniently incorporates all of the new information available as of the date of publication. An invaluable work of scholarship. I only regret that it is not available in a print edition. Perhaps at some point it will be?

A Goldmine of Information

Dr. Heck is the world's foremost authority on Mauro Giuliani. This publication is the culmination of many years of research, including previously unknown information, images, and documents. It is not meant to be a compelling "story" as one reviewer has suggested; instead, it fully explores the historical record as we know it--and this at times includes conflicting data, as all good scholarly editions must do. This is a great book!

I'm completely disappointed with this new electronic edition, mainly because it is now without the thematic catalogue of Giuliani's works. I have a copy of the original T Heck's PhD as a paper printout which due to the binding is rather uncomfortable in use, but at least it has a proper catalogue of works. Now I thought it is just updated, but no -- it's only a simplified list of compositions. Good and indispensable tool just degenerated, shame.
