A scholarly review, with a fan's perspective
By KM
A decade after Buffy the Vampire Slayer left the air, the show still continues to gain fans as well as significant scholarly attention. Mark Field's episode-by-episode reviews of the series are excellent critical analyses of the show incorporating many different focal points. I really like the extended preview essay that lays out the overall purpose of the series long analysis and explains various topics and issues that will be explored in the essays to follow. In my opinion, a mark of excellence in art (and the consideration of episodic television as art) includes the work's longevity and its amenability to analysis from multiple perspectives. Field's essays show that BtVS continues to grow in stature as a work of art. If you are a fan of the show, these reviews will remind you of why it was so great and give you further appreciation and insight from a new perspective.

A fascinating and enthralling overview of Buffy
By PC
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a brilliant TV series that continues to engage viewers to this day. While there are several books of essays dealing with the show, this is the first I've found with essays on each episode. Some essays are short, others are longer; all offer fascinating insights that enrich one's appreciation of the shows' characters, plots and relationships.

I'm just starting to rewatch this brilliant series, and after each episode I dip into Mark Field's e-book, checking his comments on each particular episode. Usually he has several gems to offer that I hadn't considered. At about 400 pages, I feel as though I have a feast of essays to savor along with the TV series.

Now, if only Mark Fields would expand his authorial horizons to include the ANGEL series, we'd have a complete and superb overview of Joss Whedon's Buffyverse.

I'd tell you about this book but I don't want to spoil it for you...

What can I complain about for a dollar, right? Well, this is a published effort and it warrants open, constructive criticism and discussion. As a longtime fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I found Mr. Field's "book" equally rewarding and exasperating. Indeed, its greatest strength—the wide range of considered viewpoints is a direct result of Mr. Field's having mediated or participated in a deluge of online critical discussion while the show was ongoing—is also its chief weakness: too much of it still reads like a discussion board. Certainly Mr. Field has given it a bit of a scrub and set most of the discussions within an appropriate and helpful rhetorical framework; but for my taste there is too much backchat preserved from various board participants. I honestly don't care about the vehemence of the pro-Spike and anti-Spike camps and how they were so very mean to each other while the series was first running. That's a different book entirely, and one I would never, ever pick up.

When Mr. Field commands the conversation and explains his views and theories as to what BtVS means in the context of (primarily Western) philosophy and mythology, he is at his best. His insights and perspicacity—both on individual episodes and seasonal and series story arcs, character development, and especially metaphorical roles of the dramatis personae—are worth slogging through the occasionally turgid waters of the ancient formative discussions conducted by the First Geeks.

However, what may NOT be worth putting up with is Mr. Field's inexplicable decision to avoid forward spoilers—to treat the entire series as it originally played, episode by episode, and to belay, over and over and over again, any substantive discussion relevant to THIS episode that could spoil the coming episodes for the audience. That is to say, he has written and published a book purporting to delve into the use of myth, metaphor, and morality of a cultishly popular television series, and aligned the whole sodding thing for the benefit of somebody who hasn't watched the series yet. And, needless to say, to the profound detriment of the continuity of thematic discussion that the rest of us—the ACTUAL fans—would love to dive into when it actually matters. This can be mighty infuriating—especially when he refers to "subtle hints" in the dialog that he won't actually identify because they "won't be resolved until the season finale"; and suchlike.

But I have to review the overall work decently; as I say, Mr. Field covers a lot of interesting ground, if along a maddeningly circuitous route.
