Dear Reader,

Do you remember your first love? Maybe not even your first real love, but that secret someone who made your heart beat faster, who made it difficult for you to breathe whenever they were around? What if that person was also your best friend? It would complicate things, wouldn't it?

When I started this book I knew that Cooper and Melissa had a past. They'd never been a couple, but she'd had a real crush on him when she was younger. But he'd also been her best friend, and she'd finally had to let go of her romantic notions and accept that he'd always just be...a friend. She'd moved on - without knowing that Coop's feelings had changed.

Now they're all grown up, and old feelings are back. More than just old feelings, really, because they're not teenagers anymore. They're older, wiser, not thinking so much about stealing a kiss behind the bleachers but about failed marriages and old wounds and how risky it is to give your heart to someone.

There was something really special about writing this story, and I think it was that Coop and Mel had always had a connection that went deeper than friendship or attraction. They had a past that connected their hearts together in a way that time couldn't erase.

"No, you idiot! I've been trying to have a baby!"

The words rippled through the air and she immediately pressed a hand to her mouth. She hadn't meant to say it. Especially not like that. Coop's face went white and he looked like he needed to sit down to digest what she'd just said.

"You've been...With who?"

He turned his face toward her. Heat rose to her cheeks in embarrassment. For years she'd ignored the fact that once upon a time she'd have done anything to have his hands and lips on her like they'd been only moments ago. Now that they had been...it took her back to those days of desperately trying to get his attention. To make him see her as more than just a friend. And now he thought she was involved with someone. At any other time it would be comical. In light of the situation, it was just plain awkward.

"It's none of your business."

He looked up at her from beneath his sooty lashes and said ominously, "From the way you were kissing me a moment ago, I'd say it is very much my business."

I've really enjoyed everything I've read by Donna Alward, and this is no exception. "A Cowboy to Come Home to" was sweet, funny, heartbreaking, and adorable - all wrapped up in about 250 pages.

Melissa Stone grew up in Cadence Creek alongside her best friend Cooper Ford, and her boyfriend Scott. When she found her husband in bed with another woman, her life was upended - but even worse than that - Cooper knew about the affair and didn't tell her. In one day she lost the two relationships that anchored her world.

Cooper knew he hadn't done right by Mel. But when he confronted Scott about his affair his friend knew exactly what cards to play. He was backed into a corner - between wanting to tell Mel the truth and not knowing how she'd react to the whole story. If only he'd spoken up sooner...

Three years later and Melissa owns the town's floral shop - and she's flourishing. Except for one thing. She wants more than anything to be a mother. Not willing to get into another relationship, she's been trying to get pregnant at a clinic in Edmonton. Cadence Creek isn't exactly the kind of town where that's 100% acceptable, so after getting less than positive feedback from her parents she keeps the news to herself.

On top of her frustration with the failed attempts at getting pregnant, Coop was showing up everywhere. After three years of successfully avoiding each other, he just kept getting in her face. She remembers what it was like to be his friend, so she forgives him. But she's finding it very difficult to forget. Then she realizes she's not trying to forget his deception, but about the feelings she had for him before they met Scott.

Can they get over the past to make their own future?

I just *loved* this story. There was a scene where Mel and Coop had just taken a ride, and when they were walking by the water - my tummy got all fluttery. Takes a special writer to evoke real feelings like that. Highly recommended for any Cowboy/Best Friend/Hurt & Comfort Romance fan.

Since divorcing her cheating husband, Melissa Stone has focused on making her flower arranging business a success - and avoiding her ex best friend Cooper. It's not bad enough that her husband cheated on her but the simple fact that Cooper knew that he had and didn't say anything is a betrayal she isn't ready to forgive. The only thing she truly regrets about her divorce is the simple fact that she never got pregnant because having a family of her own is one of her fondest desires.

Cooper Ford deeply regrets the part he played in Melissa's divorce. He knew he should have told her but Scott, her ex, was his friend as well so the entire situation isn't as cut and dried as it would seem. In the end he lost both his best friends, but he's really hoping to be able to convince Melissa to forgive him. Then maybe someday there'd be the possibility for their friendship to become the romance he's always secretly wanted.

Cooper's really trying to get back into Melissa's good graces but she's doing everything she can to keep him at a distance. Even if she could forgive him, forgetting his betrayal is impossible so it's really for the best that they continue avoiding each other. That proves to be impossible though because they're both working on a charity project rebuilding a home for one of the families within their community who lost everything in a house fire. Avoiding each other becomes impossible and eventually Melissa clues Cooper in that she has plans to start a family - alone. Obviously the whole mom, dad, 2.5 kids, family dog and white picket fence just isn't going to happen for her - so she's prepared to scratch the dad/husband part off the list. Cooper understands her desire for a family but believes she needs more than a baby to complete the picture she has in her head - and if he's very lucky maybe he can fulfill that role.

I genuinely love Donna Alward's charming downhome romances and A COWBOY TO COME HOME TO is no exception. Melissa and Cooper are easy to empathize with and even though they're frustrated with each other there's still a connection that's evident throughout the storyline. The CADENCE CREEK is a close-knit community so we're treated to glimpses of many of the other characters who are just as memorable as Melissa and Cooper. A COWBOY TO COME HOME TO reminds readers that even in bad times there are things to be thankful for and people who will stand beside us - even if we don't want them to. Somehow I think many people forget that little life lesson so it's nice to have the reminder every once in a while. As much as I enjoyed this story there's one little issue I had with a part of the storyline that I just can't wipe from my mind, but otherwise I found this story to be wonderfully entertaining and emotionally charged.

A best friend to come home to

Cooper decides it is time to try a truce with his old time friend Melissa. He walks into her florist shop and about gives her a heart attack. She is rough as she blames Cooper for not coming clean until after the divorce from her ex husband and his ex best friend. She has done a good job in the past 3 years of avoiding Cooper in their small town.

Then all the sudden they start seeing each other every where. Mel just can't let go of the hurt especially from her ex- best friend. He knew what was going on with her ex cheating but did not share that news. She had to walk in on her ex with another woman. Why couldn't Cooper just leave her alone to get on with her life.

She wants to start a family on her own and has been trying for a while with such disappointment. When she falls apart she is at a party where Cooper is at as well and their slow paced relationship starts taking place. Can Mel ever forgive Cooper and can Cooper finally tell Mel the truth about why he kept the news to himself.

This is the first book I have read by this author and will be looking for more. I love her writing style as she can grab you into the story right from the first page. The setting is realistic and you want to know what is going to happen with the characters.

i can't wait until my garden's overflowing!

i walk away with the impression that you can pickle just about everything. it has all the ones you expect and tons you probably wouldn't. i'm intrigued by the idea of pickled peaches, apples, and walnuts. but because there are so many recipes i'm completely unfamiliar with i wish the author had spent a little time describing them and suggesting how they are best Incorporated into our meals. what does one do with pickled walnuts?

Some great recipes

Though there are some things in here I would never think to pickle (pumpkin, ewww!), and some recipes that are unique to certain tastes, I have tried a number of them and have been very pleased. These days when I go to the farmer's market, I am looking around for things to pickle. The pickled string bean and pickled carrot recipes are extraordinary, and I make them every week. I also tried the pickled jalapeno recipe for my husband, who LOVES hot peppers and even eats them raw like they are grapes, and he LOVED them. When I am doing a pickle day, I make a few extra jars of pickled stuff for him to keep in the Man Cave fridge. He spends so much time out there, you know.....don't want him to go hungry!

In addition, and as an added bonus, since he has been eating so many pickled vegetables and drinking the hot pickle juice, his sinuses have actually cleared up a bit.

For years, e-books were the answer to a question nobody was asking. Then Amazon launched the first Kindle in the fall of 2007, and I uploaded my first book to what was then called the Digital Text Platform; I actually sold a few copies the following month, and I got my first electronic payment in March 2008. Brilliant! What in the traditional publishing world took several years, on Amazon could be done in as many months. I now have twenty-four books selling on the Kindle platform under my own name and two pen-names. 
At first, like most authors, I uploaded Word documents, but I soon found that I would have more control over how the book looked if I worked instead in Html, the markup language used in creating web pages. (All e-books are Html at heart, and all e-readers are just special-purpose web browsers.) More recently I discovered Sigil software and the "epub" format used by other retailers like Barnes & Noble and the Apple iBookstore. This is, by every measure, the ideal way to build an e-book that can be sold anywhere.
This book--now in its seventh edition--condenses all I have learned over the past eight years in creating e-books for Amazon and other retailers. It's a ten-step process, to each of which I devote a chapter, some very brief. I conclude with Plan B, a simple template which you might want to use for your first foray into e-publishing, and a final chapter of tips and shortcuts you might find useful. The Fault was Mine

I read though Notjohn's Guide and found my lack of computer vocabulary to be a great hinderance. The author's writing was good and I could tell that if I had a little bit better grasp of computereez, I would have benefitted more. I will go through it again, take notes, and get help with the vocabulary.

ALEX GUARNASCHELLI is the executive chef of the New York City restaurants Butter and The Darby. A graduate of Barnard College and La Varenne cooking school, she trained with acclaimed chefs Guy Savoy in Paris and Daniel Boulud in New York. A cook book for everyone to enjoy

Alex has been a favorite of mine for some time. Her book met all my expectations. The recipes are easy to follow, wonderfully tasty and the ingredients are easy to find. I love her recipes because they are delicious without being too "grand", just luscious but great for regular people. I like that she makes it easy to follow her instructions. I think that this is a terrific book for all cooks, and would be a good gift to new cooks. My grandson is about to be married and likes to cook so this will be one of my gifts to him. It covers all types of meals and tells wonderful stories all through the book that are truly human and interesting. I am so happy that she became an Iron Chef. She really deserves this recognition.

Her work—along with that of Anne Burrell, Bobby Flay, and Michael Symon—on The Big Waste was eye-opening and life-changing for me. Of course I was pleased when she became the newest Iron Chef America. And I mean really, a restaurant called Butter? Gotta love it.

I also follow her on Twitter. It was there I learned about her first cookbook, Old-School Comfort Food: The Way I Learned to Cook. I immediately preordered it, and it arrived last week. When you’ve been eagerly awaiting something, sadly, when it arrives, you can be disappointed. I’ve not been disappointed with Old-School Comfort Food: The Way I Learned to Cook.

First, a word about the title. Many of these are not exactly things I immediately think of when it comes to comfort food or how I learned to cook. But then my mother isn’t a cookbook editor. (I mean really. I’ve been in publishing for more than 20 years. How do I get one of those gigs?) I’d venture to guess the same may be true for many of you. So you’re expecting the same-old, same-old, you probably won’t find it here. And that’s a good thing.

The book is beautifully designed. The photos are gorgeous, as you’d expect from a Clarkson Potter book. The seemingly handwritten notes and hand-drawn pictures are interesting and informative, and the “Old-School Tips” are very helpful.

If you’re one of those who read a cookbook like a novel, and even if you aren’t, Alex’s brief history of her childhood and career are interesting and help put everything in context. Don’t skip that section. Seriously.

Her recipes are well written and easy to follow. You’ll find recipes for dishes like mussels, duck hearts, and roasted whole salmon. But there are also recipes for various ways to cook chicken, roast turkey that will put it on your menu throughout the year (along with guides to making a great Thanksgiving dinner), and apple crisp. In other words, the recipes in Old-School Comfort Food: The Way I Learned to Cook span a wide range of tastes. And while some of the dishes may look complicated, Alex takes you through each step, so you can make and serve the dish with confidence.

I have a love/hate relationship with Brussels sprouts. I love them, but I hate to cook them. Why? Because I tend to burn them. I tried Alex’s roasted Brussels sprouts, and they were perfect! Those tiny little cabbages are back in my repertoire. The photo of her “Little Spare Ribs” was so appetizing, I had to make them. Though the recipe calls for spare ribs, I used country style ribs, because—all together now—it’s what I had on hand. Oh my, those were some mighty tasty ribs. I’ll be making them again.

You know how much I love making my own easily purchased items, so I was thrilled to see a section on doing just things. There are recipes for mustard, marinades, and barbecue sauce, among other things. Her recipes for ricotta and butter are different from mine (I use whey for ricotta and homemade cultured buttermilk for butter), but they still sound good.

And while you may think this is a love letter to Alex and her cookbook, I do have a couple of criticisms. First, the book doesn’t lie flat. This is a common problem, and I really wish publishers would accept the idea these books are actually used, and being able to open the book and have it lie flat is a big deal. At least to me. Yes, it would likely cost more, but . . .

Also, in her recipe for ricotta, she tells the cook to, “Simmer gently until the milk solids rise to the surface and form what looks like a raft, 30 to 35 minutes.” I know what she means, but to someone who is unfamiliar with making cheese, it may not be clear. It would be helpful to include the temperature or show a photo of curds separating from the whey.

These criticisms should not discourage you from getting Old-School Comfort Food: The Way I Learned to Cook. I know most of us have limited cookbook-buying budgets, but this one deserves a look.

Beautiful Cookbook

I have been seeing this book advertised on Food Network and I just had to have this. I admire this Chef and think her food looks really good on TV. This is a lovely cookbook, sort of the old fashioned design and binding yet still new a vibrant. What I love are all the pictures of the food so that you know what it is supposed to look like as an end product. So many cookbooks do not have enough pictures and so when you make something, you kind of wonder if you did it right. This book has a very nice assortment of recipes and when it says "old School", they really mean it. Almost every recipes has a section that talks about tips for making this recipe like you mom or grandmother might have done. I think it is sort of fun to read these tips. This cookbook is not only useful but a fun read.

This collection of maps aids in research of the third day at Gettysburg

These detailed maps are helpful in my research of the third day of battle at Gettysburg, and especially of the cavalry battles both on the east field and the south field. It is disappointing that these events on that day, as well as the cavalry clash on July 2 have been mostly ignored. The story of the battles at Gettysburg are vast and I am sure many feel their specific part of that epic event are ignored, but I know the story of the cavalry has been most seriously ignored. These events of the third day of the battle involved one of the most dramatic cavalry charges of any war, and involved some famous people on both sides including JEB Stuart for the Confederates and a young brigadier general George Custer for the union. These maps help fill in some of the blanks left by many of the descriptions of the infantry and artillery battles that capture the attention of most who travel to this enormous historic battlefield.
