Encounters with Jesus Series
By Darian Burns
Timothy Keller is in the midst of releasing a 10-part series called "Encounters with Jesus". If all the books are as solid as the ones which I have read, they are well worth your time. As a pastor, one of my biggest impediments in leading others to know Christ is that they believe they know him already. They have grown up in the church, gone to Sunday School, heard all the Bible stories, and they think that is the equal as knowing him.
The books in this series question the assumptions we make about Christ. Each book in the series covers a conversation Jesus had with someone. These conversations were not about individual sins or particular theological beliefs and practices, nor were they a bunch of talking points or a political platform. Instead, in these encounters we see him meeting people at the point of their important, unspoken questions: Who are we, and why are we here? Why be a good person; why love rather than hate? What's wrong with the world--And what, if anything, can make it right?
The Gospels are crawling with encounters that made a deep impression on those who conversed with Jesus in this way. Keller examines these encounters and how they can still address our questions and uncertainties today.
So far, I have read three:
"The Grieving Sisters", which is the story of Mary and Martha mourning their brother's death. Here, we are faced with the questions, what does the world need, and who can make the world right? Keller examines the individual personality of Jesus and shows us that because he is both God and man, he is capable of providing everything we need.
"The Wedding Party" covers Jesus' very first public act in starting his ministry was to turn water into wine in the middle of a wedding celebration. Here, Keller unpacks the significance of the feast--a symbol of the end of judgment, the celebration to come, and the atonement needed to make it possible.
"The First Christian" delves into an encounter between Jesus and Mary Magdalene, one of his most beloved followers. In this book, Keller illuminates the Christian belief of faith and make sense of its function in solving the crucial mysteries of life.
Each book is wonderfully written and easy to understand, yet deep in truth and wisdom.

Short and sweet in the best sense of the phrase
By Marian R. Van Til
This little book in the Encounters with Jesus Series is about Mary Magdalene's encounter with Jesus on (what we call) Easter Sunday morning. Keller has a way of mining Scripture and uncovering small truths within the Bible's larger Truth that many others seem to overlook (or hadn't discovered).
I've found that to be true here -- and in each of the books in the series. Every one is based on a very familiar passage of Scripture/character(s) in Scripture -- ones you've read dozens of times and heard numerous sermons on if you're a long-time Christian and church-goer. Yet Keller always provides at least one or two fresh insights, and that makes the whole story fresh again. Sometimes pastors who present "new" things in a passage are finding those things because they're interpreting Scripture in unorthodox ways. That certainly is not the case with Keller. One might conclude that God has given him a gift of profound biblical insight -- and that the Spirit is at work in the retelling of these biblical stories.(God's Word does not return to him empty, Isaiah tells us).
These books are short and sweet in the best sense of that phrase. I recommend reading them all.

Have You Encountered the Resurrected Christ?
By Dr. David P. Craig
The First Christian is an exploration of the paradox that Christian faith is both impossible and irrational. Keller demonstrates how this paradox is true in light of the resurrection account as told by John in chapter 20 of his Gospel. In this essay by Keller we learn what true faith is about in the light of Jesus' encounter with Mary Magdalene after his rising from the dead.
The impossibility of faith resides in the fact that all people are spiritually dead. Despite Jesus' many references to his death and resurrection his disciples totally failed to recognize Jesus immediately after his rising from the grave. When Mary sees the empty tomb she immediately thought that Jesus' body was stollen. The reality is that whether in the first or twenty first century belief in the resurrection of Christ doesn't come naturally to anyone. All theological traditions agree that we can't produce saving faith in Jesus solely through our own ability. The reality is that saving faith is impossible without the supernatural intervention of God Himself. Therefore in the first section of this essay Keller explores our natural skepticism and how to deal with our doubts.
In the second half of the essay Keller shows how rational biblical faith is. The faith of the first Christians was the result of a personal encounter with Jesus - based on objective evidence. During the time of Christ (much like in today's skeptical climate) Jews, Greeks, and Romans all denied the possibility of a physical resurrection. Salvation was primarily viewed as the liberation of the soul from the body. Keller explores several of the reasons why the disciples were initially so skeptical of the resurrected Jesus. The disciples were no more expecting a bodily resurrection of Christ than people in the twenty-first century are.
Keller goes on to show the evidence required of a skeptic (whether back then or now) to actually believe in a resurrected Christ. He gives a compelling argument for the literal bodily resurrection of Christ and how it objectively provides the evidence necessary for a cogent faith.
Tim states it this way, "What kind of evidence would you need in order to believe that Jesus Christ was the Son of God, resurrected from the dead? Whatever that evidence is, you can reasonably conclude that they must have had something like it. And if that's so, the evidence that convinced them and brought them to faith might be enough to convince you too."
In this essay Keller provides the skeptic with much food for thought in giving a convincing argument for why faith in Jesus leads to salvation, and fortifies the existing faith of the Christian giving him or her rational reasons for why faith in Christ makes sense in this life, and the one to come.
