First meeting leads to first date—first everything for Mike—and soon Kellen’s faced with breaking his just-friends-with-benefits rule. Yet as his elderly mother wanders deeper into senility, Kellen wonders if it’s better to lean on Mike rather than fall.

Almost As Good As Her Others

I have so enjoyed this author's writing, that I pre-ordered this one and was excited at seeing it simply show up in my Kindle list.
However, I can honestly say that it's just not as good as the others - at least, it wasn't for me.
Most M/M Romances follow a certain script, usually one man more in love with the other, at first, some kind of illness or injury or attack that makes one realize how important the other one is to them, avoiding the "love" word until the final pages of the book - let's be honest, it's a tried-and-true formula.
This book was another go at the formula with some notable exceptions. The lovers were 37 and 40, rather than 21 and 25. They were hardly idealized - one has acne pits on his face, and the other doesn't like to take his clothes off when he has sex. The illness was that of one lover's mother, not of the lovers themselves, and it was, trust me, seemingly interminable. The crisis is (as it often is), one lover pushing away the other one because he didn't want to hurt him/lose him/commit, etc. The sex is mercifully brief.
However the story drags badly. The bulk of the book revolves around the extremely depressing details of the mother's illness and dementia and I promise you, you'll wish she'd passed away quietly in her sleep before you get to the last pages. The ending is too facile, the HEA forced, sudden and not particularly moving.
And, by the way, the one lover's "older and wiser" sister is not wiser, just stunningly annoying.
So, although I do recommend this author highly, I cannot, in good conscience, recommend this book.

fantabulous - wait is that a word

I ordered a simple book from an author I have liked on the past. Have you ever ordered A and got B but when you finished you felt better than if you had gotten A. Kaje Harper gave me what I needed instead of what I wanted and that always makes the experience better. I loved reading this story and even though i was feeling my chest hurt and my eyes tear up during most of the story cause let me tell you Harper's writing has you feeling all of the anxiety and stress wanting to fix everything for Kellen and Mike the way you would for good friends and every now and then hit someone on the back of the head to make them wise up. That is the best kind of stories ones that make you feel like you are with a loved one. Like life this book has no easy answers but is a great journey if you take the trip. Enough metaphors buy the dang book. Plus hot sex - woohoo.

Disappointing

Like AA Katz, I pre-ordered this book. I regret having done so.
Harper's other books (and even short stories, such as Like the Taste of Summer) all feature enormously appealing lead characters, and usually quite interesting secondary characters (often children or young adults). By contrast, this book's most interesting characters, Kellen's two neighbors, get around 5 pages between them.
Mike's sister is over the top, to put it mildly. His nieces and nephews are almost wholly absent, and even when they do appear, they make no impact on the story. The two lead characters are at best underdeveloped (it takes a while to figure out Mike isn't unemployed) and their none-too-plausible relationship comes across as incidental to what appears to be the actual story--the mother's dementia and the devastating effect it has on all around her. As such, this is an extremely depressing book.
In contrast to all of Harper's other writings, which I'd recommend very strongly, I wouldn't recommend this book.
