About the Author
Professor William Gibson is Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Oxford Brookes University and Director of the Oxford Centre for Methodism and Church History. His most recent publications are The Church of England 1689-1832: Unity and Accord, (2001); The Enlightenment Prelate: Benjamin Hoadly 1676-1761, (2004); James II and the Trial of the Seven Bishops (2009) and the Oxford Handbook of the British Sermon 1689-1901 (2012) He has extensive experience of editorial work and managing collections of essays, including joint editorship of Religious Identities in Britain, 1660-1832, (with Robert Ingram, Ashgate, 2005); Politics, Religion and Dissent: 1660-1832, edited jointly with Robert Cornwall (Ashgate, 2010) and is book reviews editor for Archives, the journal of the British Records Association. He is co-editor of Wesley and Methodist Studies. He is a fellow of the Royal Historical Society and of the Royal Society of Arts. Dr Peter Forsaith is Research Fellow of the Oxford Centre for Methodism and Church History at Oxford Brookes University. His research focuses on aspects of religion, culture and society in eighteenth-century England. His publications include Unexampled Labours: The Letters of the Revd John Fletcher of Madeley to Leaders in the Evangelical Revival (2008). Other publications include John Wesley: religious hero? Outstanding book

This outstanding book gives you a new perspective on understanding the Bible. I have read 5 commentaries on the Bible and this one lays it all out so you can really be a follower (and doer) of and with your Best friend, Jesus the Christ. Read this book and start living a real Christian life.

Review for Unlikely

Unlikely was an interesting read that followed the story of Satina through her struggles in a town, Westwood, she came across while escaping the gangs. Here, she meets Marten, an imp Skinner, and Hadja who is knowledgeable in herbs. Their world is torn apart when Starlights (a magic-hungry gang) comes to town. Their leader, Vane, uses Satina to find magic. Together with her two new acquaintances Satina must find a way to fight back (or run away).

Characters: The story was written in third person following Satina, a Granter. Therefore, the reader followed her throughout the whole story. Satina was a great character. She was strong but not unrealistically so. She was caring and wanted to do what was best for those around her. Marten and Hadja were also interesting characters with mystery and a deeper past that the reader was left wondering about the finer details for (perhaps in the next book?) The Villain in the story, Zane, was fairly one dimensional in that he was bad – magic/power hungry and that's about it.

Plot: The plot grew more adventurous as the story progressed and led to a good climax. There were a few twists within the story that left the reader wondering, "What will they do now?" The ending left leeway for the next book but settled the current troubles in the book. One thing that I would have liked to see was a little more explanation of the terms for this particular fantasy (such as Granter, Shades, etc.) I got a rough idea but did not completely understand it, especially at the beginning of the story. Also a little more background on the Final War would have been great (however, the reader was at the mercy of Satina's limited knowledge of these things.)

Overall, I enjoyed the book and finished it within two days. The story kept me interested, and it flowed throughout the whole book. If you like fantasy novels and adventure, you might want to give this book a try.

Dark Fantasy, Strange Magic

I had to read fairly far into this book before I understood the world of the characters and the nature of their magic. The entire world, at least as far as we know, has been divided up between two rival gangs: the Starlights and the Shades, both bad. What warlord rules the gangs we never know, as each unit of gang members has its own leader. Although the leader appears to answer to no one, the gangs do have both symbols and colors. They have quite literally rendered the world black and blue.

Once, long ago, it seems that those of magic blood ruled and created palaces and beautiful objects. But most of that race is no more. The Gentry who remain generally hide in magical pockets and have little interaction with the outside. And they are the lesser, unadmired magical beings: imps and fiends and fauns and such. They do have SOME dealings with humans, however, because Satina and Marten and those like them who do walk the earth are half human, half Gentry.

The full blooded Gentry tolerate some half-bloods to an extent. Satina can visit them at times, but she cannot stay. She can freely enter unpeopled pockets, and she can work some small magic, though no one has really trained her. Most humans hate and fear magic and persecute the magic-blooded among them. At the same time, humans do enjoy using magical objects.

Marten understands his nature better than Satina does because she was abandoned at birth on a library doorstep and raised among books. Do other readers tire as I do of foundling magical heroes who know neither their true parents nor their full abilities?

Not much actually happens in the story beyond our learning all this background. Of course we have a fight against a gang, and of course we have a romance. And of course Satina herself learns a lot. We also have a number of grammatical flaws, especially a sometimes confusing overuse of commas. And the inevitable use of "exhale" as a noun.

I do come to like the characters more as I understand them better, but overall the darkness and gloom in the book leave me depressed. I don't understand why those who better understand magic do not teach Satina more. I don't understand why no place in the world welcomes the magical ones. I DO like Henry.

These Kingdoms might be Gone, but not forgotten!

Review: Unlikely (Kingdoms Gone) by Frances Pauli: Aw! My most favourite ending of all. A happy ending. Sigh. What an awesome book. It opens the door to a slew of new characters and brings in creatures great and small to titillate the imagination. Satina is a lovely character that draws you in with her goodness and willingness to see the good in everyone. She is half Gentry, and a goodmother. A granter. Skipping though one pocket of magic to the other, to escape those chasing her, as well as to help those who want her to grant them a wish, she comes across an unlikely fellow named Marten. A Skinner. An imp. But Satina, being Satina, only sees the good in him, and her heart leads her down a path of adventure, love, friendship, betrayal and ultimately a happy ending. Yay! The story is well written, the plot well thought out, and intricate enough to make me concentrate from page to page, and thus kept me focused on all the good stuff that my wandering mind might normally miss. Talk of gangs trying to take over, ransacking towns and riding roughshod over everyone, sigils, magic, hidden treasures from long ago, and a history that bears serious investigating into, kept me riveted and eager to read the next part of the story. A tantalizing glimpse into book two is offered at the end. I would recommend this book to anyone.

I purchased my 4 vol set in 1985 and I am truly grateful that this is now on Kindle and at such a give away price! Please continue to put Catholic books on Kindle so that more people can avail of food for the soul. Having a Kindle has brought me great joy in having with me all the precious books that I love ! Beautiful and Inspiring

First, I have to admit that I'm not smart enough to comprehend even a fraction of the depth that's contained in these writings. That being said, since reading this, along with The Dolorous Passion, and The Life of the Blessed Virgin (St. Anne Catherine Emmerich) my Faith has grown exponentially. It's an interior growth that's inexplicable and an awesome gift. Read this book, and the others, without worrying whether it's "too deep" or above your understanding. The gifts contained here are too precious to pass up.

As someone raised a Catholic and then later in life having spent some years reading the Bible several times with Evangelicals, I find this book extremely satisfying. It is a bit arduous as a read, for Sister Agreda takes her time. But knowledge of the position of the Virgin Mary in the plan of man's salvation is so greatly hidden. And as you will find out if you read this, Mary was so extremely humble, that at the Church's inception, it was her choice and prudence that left her part in the salvation of man so underreported. This is of course the very reason she was chosen as the Mother of God made man in the first place. And for me this book fills in the missing pieces of the role of the woman in salvation. Read Genesis and the Revelation.
I don't believe that very many protestants will be able to swallow what this book reveals about her, for they have denied themselves access to this "science," or knowledge by their position of Sola Scriptura.
If you wish to understand MORE of the story of salvation and have an open mind you will read this book.
If you have found your comfort zone in the chantings of Sola Scriptura, you will reject this book out of hand.
To these folks I have a question, and a comment.
Which of the 4000 or so versions of Sola Scriptura do you subscribe to?

While the 1990s gave rise to a wealth of literature on the notion of ethical foreign policy, it has tended to simply focus on a version of realism, which overlooks the role of ethics in international affairs, lacking an empirical analysis of foreign policy decision-making, with relation to ethical values in the post-Cold War period. This book addresses this gap in the literature by exploring ethical realism as a theoretical framework and, in particular, by looking at US humanitarian interventions at an empirical level to analyse ethical foreign policy in practice. Furthermore, it moves beyond the debate on legality or legitimacy of humanitarian interventions and focuses on whether a state would intervene for humanitarian purposes.

Chang provides a deeper understanding of ethical foreign policy in theory and practice by applying ethical realism as a theoretical framework to evaluate the Clinton administration's foreign policy on humanitarian intervention. She addresses concepts of moral leadership and pragmatic foreign policy in the field of international relations in general and foreign policy analysis in particular.

Dr John Janzekovic is lecturer in international relations and Australian politics at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) in Queensland, Australia, and lecturer in Australian and Asia Pacific politics at Vaxjo University in Sweden. John has 22 years military experience and prior to entering academia he was Officer-in-Charge and Head of School at the Royal Australian Airforce (RAAF) B707 and C-130 Hercules School at RAAF Richmond, Australia and the F-111 Strategic Strike and Reconnaissance Aircraft School at RAAF Amberley, Australia. John's specialist research areas include international and humanitarian law, interventionist politics, peace and conflict studies, military ethics, and terrorism. He is an invited speaker on humanitarian intervention and terrorism at the Australasian Political Studies Association conferences. John is editor for the theme 'Humanitarian Intervention' in the academic journal Social Alternatives and he is on the editorial board for the Australasian Journal of Human Security.

Excellent ending to a wonderful trilogy!

I don't even know how to review this book. Whatever I say is not going to do it justice. Duchess is the final book in the Daughters of Fortune trilogy, which spanned three generations. It truly felt like the culmination of an epic at the end.

Susan May Warren writes amazing characters. They just become like good friends. And her stories are always surprising, informative, and inspiring. This is Rosie's story. She starts out running away from a tormented past and trying to make it big in old Hollywood, but of course there are some bumps and detours along the way, and eventually she has to decide if making it big is what she really wants and if accolades and applause are enough.

I loved basically everything about this book. All the authentic characters, the intertwining story lines, and setting! From the glitz and glamour of old Hollywood, to cafes in Paris, and waltzes in Vienna. It was amazing and fun, and I learned a lot actually. I loved the behind the scenes look at Hollywood and movie production. And I got a kick out of reading about the casting and production of Gone with the Wind (my absolute favorite book and movie.) I loved that the plot had a whole deeper layer to it that, for most of the book you're totally unaware of, as is Rosie. The twist reminded me of old war movies like Casablanca, or the production that Rosie was supposed to be staring in in the book.

I enjoyed reading about Rosie. She has flaws, she's already had a rough life, as we read about in Baroness, and she has some wounds and battle scars to show for it. She doesn't always make the best decisions and she knows that. But she's spunky and stubborn and strong. Even courageous when it counts. I liked that her decisions, even her bad ones, rang true. I liked that she admitted, at least to herself, when she knew that she might be making a mistake, but she was feeling lonely/sad/desperate/scared/selfish and just didn't care. I think we've all had those moments. I also liked that she didn't quit trying. She never gave up and she did eventually get her happy ending.

One thing I like about all of Susan May Warren's writing is that she doesn't push issues under the rug. She treats her characters like real people. If they've had a tragedy in the past it effects them, falling in love with "the one" doesn't make it all go away. Her characters always have to work through their own issues independent of whatever love story may be going on. Whether they have support from the love interest or not, the characters always have to ultimately face themselves and their issues head on and go through the process of dealing with them, not running away or covering them up. I respect that and I enjoy reading about it. Well, Susan makes it enjoyable to read about. And at the end you come away much more satisfied than if the story was just girl meets boy, they fall in love and all their problems magically disappear, they live happily ever after, the end. :)

Emotionally gripping series!

A story rich in redemption and love, Duchess is the third and final installment in The Daughters of Fortune Series. The story evolves around Rosie Worth aka Roxy Price. Rosie, a strong and courageous woman with a kind heart, is still making poor decisions which are followed by heartache and turmoil.

The story begins in 1929 and the actress, Roxy, is in a clandestine marriage to Dashielle Parks. The marriage is more of a partnership or business arrangement with little or no romance. Rosie/Roxy brings all of her problems on herself. She's created her own nightmares by taking hold of her destiny instead of allowing God to deliver His chosen destiny to her. She seems to have a great capacity for making mistakes and creating unhappiness in her life. Rosie had been a daughter of an heiress who had been bequeathed a fortune. But she'd turned it down, wanting to find her own life - her own destiny.

Roxy, as an actress, had her share of applause, but she always craved more. When the applause died down, she felt emptiness. She had two chances at love, most people only get one chance in a lifetime. Her first love, Guthrie, who died in Baroness, and now Rolfe, the Duke of Beaumont, her second love. As the story unfolds, it becomes apparent that Rolfe, living in Europe, is transporting refugees, Jews, and other political prisoners out of the country - ahead of the Nazis. This was an interesting back-drop to the story. The story becomes very complex, but ends with a happy and satisfying conclusion.

Rosie finally finds forgiveness and redemption for her stubbornness and for all the ways she's destroyed her destiny. She is filled with peace for the first time in her life and a love that she could surrender her heart to. She finds true redemption that is rich and profound.

The author cleverly weaves a tale of generational secrets in this series. I recommend reading them in order: #1 Heiress, #2 Baroness, and #3 Duchess. I must say, this book just didn't capture my excitement early on, but as the tempo picked up I became fully engaged. All in all, it was a beautifully crafted and emotionally gripping series that I highly recommend.

Completely Loved Duchess!!

I had a feeling going into Duchess that it would be a good read - I just didn't know how good. I loved this book so much and it is definitely a favorite of mine now. Wow, Susan May Warren definitely knows how to write a gripping story with a great message. Duchess had me feeling so many emotions and there were a few times I started crying because the story was so touching.

I loved the characters! Rolfe was such a great guy - I absolutely loved his character and would say he was my favorite from Duchess, though Rosie is a close second. I'm sad Duchess is the final book in the Daughters of Fortune series - I just don't want to say goodbye to them yet - but the ending was wonderful and wrapped things up very well.

The whole movie making aspect in Duchess was really interesting and I loved getting a glimpse into that world. I also really liked another part of the story, but I won't tell you what it is as I don't want to spoil it for future readers.

Duchess was a fantastic book and I completely loved reading it! If you enjoy books with drama, romance, intrigue, and a great message, I definitely recommend Duchess - just be sure to read Heiress and Baroness first or I think you'll be a little confused about some things (this is definitely a series best read in order).
